Robert E. Hawthorne, 91, of Shenango Township, passed away the morning of December 9, 2022 at UPMC Avalon Place.
Born in New Castle on May 26, 1931, Robert was the son of the late Warren and Orpha Rhodes Hawthorne.
Preceding him in death on November 14, 2000, is his devoted wife of over forty-eight years, the former Ito Kuroda, whom he married on March 12, 1952.
Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War, working at the United Nations and the National Security Agency.
He then worked at Rockwell Technologies and The Crane Company until his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and working on cars. Robert loved traveling and was multilingual, and spoke eight different languages.
He is survived by his three grandchildren, Michael Suzuki and wife Missy, Bronco Suzuki and wife Jessica, Betty Owens; several great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Robert is preceded in death by his son, Hisao Suzuki and his brothers and sisters, Howard, John, Irvin, Hazel, Clarabelle, Tina, and Orpha.
Visitation is Wednesday from 12pm to 1pm at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory 941 S. Mill St.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform full military rites at the funeral home immediately after visitation at 1pm.
Entombment will take place at Parkside Cemetery and Mausoleum.
